Intertrop is providing the bags for this year's ELLS conference taking place at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart. ELLS stands for Euroleague for Life Sciences and is a network of leading European universities in the field of natural resource management, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences and life sciences. The annual conference gives students and teachers the opportunity to share their ideas and present their work to a broad international audience.
A bio-based economy is the center of attention at this year's ELLS conference. The subject: bio-based economy for a sustainable future. Discussed will be a sustainable and bio-based economy and the prevention of environmental pollution by non-biodegradable materials and resource and energy wasting production chains. Therefore it was absolutely unquestionable that also the provided conference bags may be no exception.
The conference bags provided by Intertrop are made of 100 % natural jute. Products made out of natural fibres are generally characterized by a resource- and energy-saving production and biodegradability and therefore contribute to the prevention of environmetal pollution. In contrast to other natural fibre plants like e.g. cotton, jute is characterized by an extremely environmental friendly cultivation. Jute is cultivated during the rainy season and therefore no irrigation is needed. In contrast to cotton, jute is very competitive and resistant and therefore could be cultivated without the use of any pesticides. Moreover the jute plant is quite undemanding regarding nutritions what allows to cultivate jute almost without any fertilizers. The jute bags are reusable and completely biodegradable.
Additionally the jute bags are produced by disadvantaged people in social projects in the producing countries which allow them to live a more self-determined life. The small-scale farmers combined to cooperatives are profitting by fair working conditions and long-term contracts.
This year's ELLS conference takes place on November 11 and 12 at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart. Related links could be found in the info boxes to the right side of this text.
